What a Wimbledon this has been. Jannik Sinner won the men’s final. It was his first Wimbledon title, too, which made it wholly special just as his opponent — Carlos Alcaraz, the winner of the French Open — was quite interesting. Sinner is the sole Italian man to have won Wimbledon. I really like him as a player, and he is still very, very young. Novak Djokovic had a good run but fell in the semifinals. It was notable that for the first time since 2002, none of the “Big Four” made the final.
On the women’s side, Iga Świątek breezed to the title. She didn’t drop a game in the final, which seldom occurs. She is the inaugural Polish player to win Wimbledon. Surprise No. 1: The top women players, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, lost in the first round.
Zeynep Sönmez, meanwhile, became the first Turkish player to reach the third round in a Grand Slam. It was also great to watch some of the new kids step up.
Petra Kvitová competed in her final Wimbledon. She’s a fantastic champion, and I hope she retires happy. That might still be true, but we will never forget the brilliant moments and big surprises of this tournament. I can’t wait for Wimbledon next year already.
