Concert Review: Echoes of an Era

Echoes of an Era concert was organized on May 15th, 2025 at Zorlu PSM Turkcell Stage and I as an attendee there. This was the season’s final concert, in which Carlo Tenan conducted the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra and violinist Ziyu He made a fine soloist.

It came after a pre-concert chat with Ali Pinar and Sibil Arsenyan, which set the scene nicely and added layers to the evening. The concert featured Walton’s Johannesburg Festival Overture, Britten’s Violin Concerto in D minor, Wagner’s Tannhäuser Overture and Mahler’s Symphony No. 10, first movement.

Overall, it was a great concert. The orchestra played very energetically and exactly, and Carlo Tenan’s conducting was correct, accurately series of musicians in both moments stronger or softer. Instrument-wise, Ziyu He played the violin exceedingly well, and captivated a group of enthusiastic listeners with his combination of technical control and emotional release throughout the title track.

As well, the Mahler symphony was especially touching, and the orchestra performed it with a lot of depth and depth from within. The atmosphere in the hall was electrifying — something I had never observed before; an experience to remember for as a guy who is still new to becoming clasical music listener.

Ultimately, the concert served as a delightful bookend to the season. It was exciting stuff and more impressive still, I hope to see another performance by the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra soon.
